Ziaur Rahman
Ziaur Rahman was the successive leader to Sheikh Mujib Rahman after his assassination in 1975. Previously, Ziaur Rahman was also a prominent military leader both in the Pakistani and Bangladeshi army as he graduated at the Pakistan Military Academy in the top 1% of his class. In the Pakistani army he was 2nd lieutenant in the Pakistani army and later became Chief of the Bangladeshi Army later leading him to political popularity and rising him to the presidency and the prime ministry. Throughout his presidency Rahman wanted to follow Sheikh Mujib's democratic principles and increase nationalism throughout Bangladesh which led to the formation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party which holds principles similar to the Awami League but it promotes democracy at the national level instead of the secular level. Throughout his office, Ziaur Rahman attempted to settle and calm tensions between the government and the United People's Party of the Chittagong Hill Tracts but many of his attempts were unsuccessful. Most notably, Prime Minister Ziaur Rahman created the Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board which focused on the socio-economics needs of the Chittagong Hill Tracts region. Ultimately, this attempt to solve the problem as the Board was unpopular and created mistrust amongst the Chittagong Hill Tracts people towards the Bangladeshi government.
