Manabendra Narayan Larma
- Manabendra Narayan Larma is a significant leader of the Chittagong Hill Tracts conflict. As a college student and a rising political leader Larma founded a political party to represent the people of the Chittagong Hill Tracts in the Pakistani Parliament during the time the now independent Bangladesh was a part of Pakistan. Later, after the autonomy of Bangladesh he founded another party called the United People's Party of the Chittagong Hill Tracts which held similar values but, wanted to have greater autonomy from the new state. In 1972, in response to the new laws enacted by the Bangladeshi government which lowered the power of the party Larma established the Shanti Bahini (Peace Force) to enforce their need for autonomy and protect their rights. Later the Shanti Bahini was used to fight the Bangladeshi police and army in a deadly physical conflict that lasted until 1997 when Sheikh Hasina Wajed and Larma (his brother) and Charu Bikash Chakma signed a peace accord which marked the climax of the conflict as the Shanti Bahini formally laid down their arms and the Bangladeshi government allowed the United People's Party of the Chittagong Hill Tracts to have more say in their government.
