Sheikh Mujib Rahman
Sheik Mujibur Rahman was a bengali politician and was also former president and prime minister of Bangladesh. As a student Prime Minister Rahman became very involved in bengali politics and became a prominent leader in the Awami League in Bangladesh which holds values of secular democracy and autonomy for the people of Bangladesh during the independence of Bangladesh Furthermore, Sheikh Mujib was a leader during the Bangladeshi Revolution and is considered to be the founder father of Bangladesh. Although, Sheikh Mujib Rahman supported autonomy of Bangladesh he did not encourage the autonomy of the Chittagong Hill Tracts as he discourages it through nationalism and the promotion of the bengali culture throughout the area. This led to a build-up of tension between The United People's Party of Chittagong Hill Tracts and the Awami League which housed a majority of the current Bangladeshi government. It is also alleged that Sheikh Mujib forcibly migrated ethnic bengalis to the Chittagong Hill Tracts to decrease the political power of the Chittagong Hill Tracts tribes such as the Chakma, a prominent tribe in the region. In general, Sheikh Mujib set laws and policies to opress the political power of the United People's Party of The Chittagong Hill Tracts which upset the ethnic tribal people and ultimately sparked the tensions that would lead to the conflict.
